Period of wing of humming bird

Hummingbird wings beat at a typical rate of 80 times per second, but can range from as low as 12 times per second up to 200 times per second. Hummingbird heart beats have been recorded as high as 1000 times per second.

Average human heartbeat

The average period of the human heartbeat is about 0.86 seconds [’t Hooft & Vandoren, 2014].

The second

Defined conventionally as 1/60th of a minute, which is 1/60th of an hour, which is 1/24th of an Earth day, the second is too important a scientific unit to be so defined, given the variations in the period of rotation of our planet. By international treaty, the unit of time known as the second is defined as exactly 9,192,631,770 cycles of the electromagnetic radiation emitted when an electron makes a transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium 133 atom [International des Poids et Mesures, 2006].

The hundred metres

The current world record [2015] for the shortest time for a human to run 100 metres is 9.58 seconds held by Usain Bolt. In comparison, the fastest land mammal, the cheetah, would take about 3 seconds. The fastest bird in powered flight, the spine-tailed swift, would fly that distance in about 2 seconds whilst the fastest fish, the sail fish, would take 3 seconds in water.
