Commercial and Enterprise

The needs and uses of commercial and enterprise augmented reality users are dramatically different from consumers. That can’t be said too often. Whereas consumers are mostly concerned with appearance and price, commercial and enterprise users are more concerned with functionality and return on investment (ROI). However, commercial users will also have consumer facing applications and have to rely on the consumers to have appropriate viewing devices, which initially were smartphones and tablets.

In the “back rooms”—the warehouse, engineering, maintenance, and fleet management (to name a few), the companies (the commercial and enterprise companies) will have complete systems consisting of database servers, communications systems, glasses, and/or helmets.

In this section, a few of the many augmented reality applications used or suggested for use by commercial and enterprise organization are offered.

Email with Personality

One vision of how augmented reality will change is offered by Magic Leap. They envision an email client superimposed on whatever you are looking at (Fig. 6.29).

Such a system could be highly interactive and become a video-conferencing system. Imagine instead of exchanging four or five emails to get a meeting scheduled your email system called the person you wanted to meet with and the two or three or more of you discussed it in real time.
