Specific Challenges/Research Agenda Items

It is necessary to leverage and move forward items identified within the ethnographic element into the knowledge elicitation for mutual learning and enhancement of understanding. The following items are important to consider: [1]

  • • What other job position or roles are most interdependent in operations?
  • • How does leadership models fit with actual supply chain production and distributed work outcomes?
  • • Are incentives a big issue in work satisfaction and performance?
  • • How salient is cybersecurity within the work setting? Has the enterprise been hacked or has information exploitation ever ensued in any known operations and business transactions?

Opportunities to Move Research Forward

  • • Convene with experts from GE/The Pennsylvania State University who actually are working in Natural Gas operations in Pennsylvania. This could be coupled to ethnographic operations but could also be considered independent:
  • • Survey commissioned
  • • Interview novices and experts
  • • Interview trainers
  • • Cognitive task/work analysis conducted at individual and team levels
  • - Application of the AKADAM techniques
  • - Use of the decision ladder (Rasmussen, 1986) activated as a cognitive model

  • [1] Where do errors, slips, mistakes, and misunderstandings tend to occurwithin various states and processes of the actual natural gas operations for • Individual level? • Team level? • Organization-enterprise level? • What impact does workload (high, medium, and low) have on worker outcomes for given situations? • Is awareness (contextual, activity, and situation) present in individual workand teamwork? When does it tend to dissipate? • Are there occupational safety or hazardous work encounters that cancause serious harm? • Does stress influence cognitive processes that in turn impact performance? How? • How does automation play into the tasks and situations that need to beaddressed on a daily basis and how could it play out in the future? • Is fatigue a condition that impinges on work performance? • How does the organization and enterprise facilitate optimum performanceacross the supply chain? • How does time pressure, material flow, and policy limit or facilitatesuccessful performance?
