How to Adopt Big Data Analytics?

Though the benefits of Big Data are clear and sound, the biggest challenge on the road to Big Data analytics is the lack of understanding of how to harness them. Companies must pay attention and commit themselves to their initiatives and use of Big Data. The effective utilisation of Big Data starts with support and commitment from top-level management in building or acquiring a sophisticated system for managing data. The companies should develop better understanding of the concepts of Big Data so that they can identify and analyse different types of data efficiently and effectively (Loebbecke & Picot, 2015). Assessing the frameworks for data generation, acquisition and management is necessary along with developing machinelearning capabilities. Usually, working with a well-established partner who can help in optimising the use of data is a better option. Generally, Big Data analytics should have a clear-cut purpose which is grounded on the right foundation and can be always conducted to draw insights for decision-making actions. Figure 3.4 exhibits the idea of effective Big Data analytics.

Big Data analytics lie on the foundation of rigid organisational governance and sophisticated technological infrastructure (Taylor-Sakyi, 2016). The companies should be committed and oriented towards Big Data with dedicated teams

with skilled personnel with the knowledge and experience to work with Big Data. Technological requirements like analytical tools for statistical analysis, forecasting, regression analysis, database querying, data-storing warehouses, machine learning and data mining are required along with the physical infrastructure to run them. On this strong foundation lie the data acquisition tools to capture, store and manage data. The captured data is analysed and the foundations to provide critical deliverable insights helpful in accurate decision-making are achieved.


In this chapter we have attempted to summarise Big Data’s role in manufacturing industries by presenting the challenges faced by today’s manufacturers and how Big Data can be a solution for them. First, we summarised the manufacturing challenges present today and explained the need for Big Data. Second, a detailed description of the concept of Big Data is presented by explaining its characteristics with help of the existing literature. Third, the various advantages Big Data brings into manufacturing is detailed and finally a brief note on Big Data analytics adoption is provided. This chapter contributes to the literature on Big Data and its importance in manufacturing.
