Summary and key points
The chapter has mapped the landscape of case study and participatory research work within qualitative research, prior to establishing the position of participatory case study within these two diverse fields. It also argued for the refraining of participatory case study work building on the parameters outlined by Reilly (2010), but in our adaptations focused on a blended approach actioned through, an embedded set of ‘vision and values’ and the ‘stepping model’. A central part of the ‘stepping model’ is enabling an egalitarian relationship between the researcher and participant co-researchers, defining a particular ‘modus operandi’ for doing a participatory case study in diverse settings. At its core the ‘stepping model’ argues for a flexible stance to inquiry and action, embracing a range of approaches that can be aligned with participatory case study as well as a diverse set of methods and techniques that can lead to social action.
The range of participatory case study exemplars detailed in the subsequent chapters provides an illustration of how the ‘vision and values’ and the ‘stepping model’ were embedded within the research act lived by academic and participant co-researchers alike. They provide a narrative account of how the flexible approach was adopted that enabled participatory' case study work to be tailored to the emergent partnership working and the co-production of knowledge through the inherent creativity of the person with lived experience, hi a sense, each chapter should be read as an intrinsic case with its own key messages aligned to its focus and characteristics, but also more widely as case exemplars of our blended approach to participatory case study work in action.
