  • • Goal-setting is a technique that provides us with a formal plan of action and carefully designed stages for completion, including dealing with inevitable setbacks.
  • • Goal pursuit can be enhanced by developing positive adaptive habits.
  • • Goal-setting and goal-pursuit is much more than just deciding where we want to go and involves both intention and implementation.
  • • A goal must be dynamic, that is, it must form part of our learning or personal development, rather than something we decide upon and then neglect until we either reject it outright or find ourselves so far off track that the entire reason for setting the goal has been lost.
  • • Goals can be chunked, or broken down into more manageable sub-goals with rewards at each stage.
  • • Rewards can be offered, but might not be required, as our intrinsic motivation may not need the push in the same way as our extrinsic motivation.
  • • Goals should be self-referenced, that is, personal to the individual and shouldn't be used as a means to measure progress or success in comparison to others.
  • • Goal-pursuit is tightly bound up in many other factors and techniques. Factors such as planning and time management enhance goal-pursuit, while procrastination can inhibit it.
