Functions of Bones

Bone is a calcified, living and connective tissue forming the majority of the skeleton. Moreover, bone is the ultimate biomaterial because it is light, strong, which can adapt to its functional demands and repair itself. The functions of the bones in the human body are abundant and crucial which include the following aspects:

  • • Bones form the framework of the body. Like a house, we need our support “beams” to hold us upright and literally provide our body with a solid foundation.
  • • Bones are vital for protecting the most important and fragile organs in the body. For example the chest protects the heart, while the skull keeps the brain safe from harm.
  • • Bones work with joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscle to produce movement of limbs.
  • • Bone marrow, which is found in the inner part of the bones, is crucial for producing both red and white blood cells. Red blood cells can deliver oxygen and nutrients throughout the body and remove waste and white blood cells are involve in the body’s immune system.
  • • Bones reserve a lot of calcium and phosphorus which are the most important minerals the body needs to function. They are stored or released over the body of calcium and phosphorus metabolism.
  • • Bones produce a hormone-signaling protein called osteocalcin to regulate blood sugar levels and manage weight. Additionally, the link between weak bone health and cardiovascular health is becoming increasingly evident.

Overall, bones play a much larger role in our bodies than simply keeping us stand on our own 2 ft. From blood cell production to mineral storage and so much more besides, bones are miraculous in the human body.
