The last way in which we discussed the modeling of mathematical ideas is the process of problem posing and connecting mathematical reasoning with real-world situations. These types of problems are open ended and messy and require creativity and persistence. One of the teachers who incorporated mathematical modeling as one of his regular mathematics routines shared how launching a unit on number sense and place value using the Sports Stadium Proposal made the unit more meaningful for students.

Students used multi-digit numbers in context and rounded the large number to estimate and compute the budget. The teacher quickly realized that his students needed to use and learned skills beyond the originally planned standards as the real-world problem required more mathematics to be involved to solve the problem. As Lesh & Fennewald (2013) state “realistic solutions to realistically complex problems usually need to integrate ideas and procedures drawn from more than a single discipline or theory or textbook topic area (p. 6).”
