Use of Handouts in the ED

Therapeutic handouts can be a beneficial addition to the ED psychiatric treatment teams box of treatment tools. While patients that are recompensating and are moving toward discharge may be a prime population to start using handouts with, any patient receiving treatment within the ED may also benefit from them.

Welcome Letter

The welcome letter acts as the patient’s introduction to their ED treatment experience. The letter simply describes what the patient is being treated for, who will be treating them during their ED stay, and what is expected of them in order to move them toward a path of wellness and potential discharge. The letter should describe in detail any rules regarding visitation policies or patient belongings policies. It can be helpful to add staff photographs to the welcome letter so the patient can place a face with the name of their treating clinicians. Photographs of the patient’s primary psychiatrist and psychiatric social worker are important as these will be the clinicians that will primarily help the patient move toward discharge.
