Cardiovascular disease

Recommendations:

RET: two to three times weekly at 13-17 on the Borg scale, two to three sets of eight to 10 repetitions; greater strength gains will be achieved at higher Borg scale ratings.

AET: (e.g., walking, biking, and aquatic exercise) two to three times weekly at 11-13 on the Borg scale, progress up to 30-40 minutes208.

Special considerations: If HTN is present, focus on aerobic activities that use large muscle groups, and aim to exercise daily for at least 30 minutes. Intensities of 40%-70% of one rep max can be equally effective at higher intensities. Use lower repetitions and more repetitions for RET207.

Contraindications: Note that beta-blockers may attenuate heart rate response and reduce exercise capacity.

Falls, Poor Balance, and Mobility Problems

Recommendations:

RET: two to three times weekly at 13-17 on the Borg scale, two to three sets of eight to 10 repetitions.

Note greater strength gains will be achieved at higher Borg scale ratings.

AET: (e.g., walking, biking, and aquatic exercise) two to three times weekly at 11-13 on the Borg scale, progress up to 30-40 minutes.

Dynamic exercises: Tai Chi and high-velocity training exercises with a concentric component performed as quickly as possible to augment muscle power. Examples: repeated performance of leg exercises on exercise machines or common functional tasks such as chair rise or climbing a step.208
