Assessing National State Standards
To achieve student mastery of the skills and concepts of the CCSSM, both the Standards for Mathematical Practices (SMP) and content must interact in such a way that the SMP guide probing class discourse for the acquisition of the skills and concepts of the standards. At the same time, the content should be set within an engaging context that is best learned through the SMP. Creating state assessments to measure this complex interaction is the work of two state-led consortiums charged with developing a system of valid and reliable CCSS assessments: Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC, www.smarterbalanced.org) and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC, www.parcconline.org). The types of questions targeted for such measures are selected-response items; technology-enhanced items to assess a deeper understanding of content and skills; constructed-response items; and performance tasks.
