Conclusions

Many developments in the structural and quantitative analysis have been made in recent years, and progress shows no sign of slowing. The modern ionization techniques of MALDI and ESI have replaced older methods such as FAB and enabled most types of carbohydrate to be ionized and analyzed by MS. New instrumentation such as the OrbitrapTM series of mass spectrometers provide the high resolution needed for resolution of many glycoforms, and ion mobility separations are showing promise for very fast separations of isomeric glycans and for handling very small quantities of material. The coming years should see further developments, particularly in the area of bioinformatics and the ability to examine even smaller and more complicated samples.
