Distribution of Lithic Artifacts and Faunal Remains

The majority of the lithic implements were found in the attached facilities of the complex (Table 7.5). From those, the military barrack had the largest number of lithic weaponry (that is, bolas, grooved boleadoras, and polishers), followed by the private rituals room (Structure-15) and the outpost. Similarly, the storage qolqa held a few bolas, along with broken grinding stones. By comparison, these implements were absent in the main building. This patterned distribution indicates that the attached facilities were involved with defense, and in a small degree with production, whereas the main building was involved with more specialized, public-oriented tasks.

In regards to faunal remains, the few bones recovered from the site belonged to camelids (n=8), along with a handful of fragmented bones. The garbage in the military barrack contained most of them, including many parts of the head (mandibles, teeth, or cranium bones). In the wall outpost, we also recovered two limbs. It is possible that this near absence of faunal remains might be partly due to preservation problems considering the humidity of the region.
