Step 3: Professional Goal

Identify a professional goal you would like to achieve in the next 5 to 10 years. A professional goal may be one that helps you achieve a specific career or vocation. If we assume that since you are reading this book you are interested in becoming a counselor, you might want to think about what you see yourself doing within this context. (Remember from chapter 3 that there are many specialty areas and settings where counselors work and do different tasks.) Visualize yourself achieving this professional goal. What does successfully meeting this goal look like? How do you feel about yourself and your chosen career path?

Just as before, think about what you learned from the process of accomplishing the past goal you identified in Step 1. How can this knowledge help inform your approach to achieving professional goals? What steps will you need to take to reach your current professional goal over the next few years? What can you put in place now to help you get to where you want to go?

Think about resources, other people, where you need to be, what research will be needed, what tools will be necessary to be successful, and so forth.
