A GLOBAL RESPONSE IN THE PREVENTION AND MITIGATION OF FOODBORNE DISEASE

The World Health Organization, Department of Food Safety, Zoonoses, and Foodborne Diseases, Cluster on Health Security and Environment has worked with member states to provide advice and assistance on the prevention and control of outbreaks of foodborne disease and food terrorism.

It has established a preventive approach to food safety with more frequent surveillance of food sources and potential causes of foodborne disease and a more rapid response to actual outbreaks and incidents of contamination. Rapid diagnosis and appropriate rapid available treatment of those who are ill is encouraged. Then it is necessary to have swift communication of information to all parts of the world.

LAWS, RULES, AND REGULATIONS

This section will be limited to the federal government only, since the use of state and local government laws, rules, and regulations would make this document overwhelming. A model food code is also discussed.

Food Codes

The US Public Health Service starting in 1924 issued its first recommended milk ordinance and then in 1926 issued a recommended milk ordinance and code which could be adopted by various communities. Then, in 1934 they issued a set of model restaurant sanitation regulations and later upgraded both types of model codes periodically and also included all types of food delivery systems in their model regulations. The current Grade A Pasteurized Milk Ordinance and Code came out in 2013. (See endnote 48.) The current Food Code came out in 2013. (See endnote 49.)
