Safe Water Drinking Act

The Safe Drinking Water Act mandates that the US EPA establishes regulations to protect human health from contaminants in drinking water. This has resulted in the development of primary and secondary drinking water standards. The hospital is considered to be a non-transient, noncommunity water system and therefore must comply with the Safe Water Drinking Act.

Resource Conservation and Recovery Act

The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act manages the disposal of wastes from municipalities and industries. It regulates how facilities generate, transport, treat, store, or dispose of hazardous waste. Under this law, most hospitals are hazardous waste generators and therefore must comply with all rules and regulations. There are different levels of generators depending on the size of the institution and specific requirements for the particular size. There are standards for: identifying solid and hazardous waste; generators of hazardous waste; transporters of hazardous waste; land disposal restrictions for hazardous waste; used oil management standards; underground storage tanks; boilers and industrial furnaces; and imminent hazards.
