Best Practices in Fly Control

  • • Conduct a survey of the sources of the flies, types of flies, and concentration of flies to determine appropriate control procedures.
  • • Check all incoming material for signs of fly infestation.
  • • Evaluate all areas near buildings for breeding places and treat them accordingly.
  • • Remove all decaying material and clean the area effectively.
  • • Rotate all produce and remove that which is starting to deteriorate, place in a sealed bag or container and have it removed daily if possible but if not at least twice weekly to an appropriate disposal site.
  • • Clean all garbage collection sites and floor drains daily and remove any organic material as well as eliminate standing water. Remove all odor-producing materials. Place dumpsters as far away from the building as possible. Ensure dumpsters are equipped with lids and drainage lines are sealed to minimize flies from entering.
  • • Caulk all cracks and crevices into buildings, screen all openings, and/or use an air curtain of high-speed air to keep flying insects out of entrances and exits to the structure. Do not leave doors open.
  • • Use insect traps outside of the buildings.
  • • Use insecticides approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and applied by trained personnel only as a last resort.
  • • Never contaminate any food contact areas. If inadvertently they do become contaminated, wash them very carefully, rinse the areas very carefully, and wash and rinse again and allow them to air dry.
