Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act

This act regulates the release of hazardous substances. It insists that any person in charge of a vessel or an offshore or onshore facility handling hazardous wastes contact the National Response Center and give them the appropriate information if a hazardous substance is released, except for those which have a federal permit, for any vessel or facility in quantities exceeding federal regulations.

Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuaries Act (Ocean Dumping Act)

This act prohibits the transportation of any substances from the United States in any manner for the purpose of dumping in the oceans.

Oil Pollution Act

This comprehensive act is designed to deal with oil spill prevention, preparedness, and the response capabilities of the federal government and industry.

Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act

This act became effective on December 19, 2008, and stipulates the types of controls that need to be taken to prevent children from dying or being injured in swimming pools. (See endnote 53.)

Coast Guard Regulations

There are several Coast Guard regulations concerning solid waste and its discharge overboard, to another ship, to a reception facility, and for incineration aboard the ship. Contact the Coast Guard for specific details.
