SUB-PROBLEMS INCLUDING LEADING TO IMPAIRMENT AND BEST PRACTICES FOR PUBLIC SEWAGE SYSTEMS

An increased temperature of the water is caused by the use of water in power plants and industries for cooling purposes. Also releases from wastewater treatment plants and stormwater retention ponds subjected to the heat of the sun, especially during the summer, can interfere with the surface bodies of water.

Infiltration and Inflow

Infiltration and inflow of water into the collection system may have a profound effect on the eventual treatment of the wastewater because of surges and too much wastewater to be treated by the existing treatment facilities. The three major components of wastewater in the sanitary sewer system are the actual flow of wastewater from homes, businesses, and industry, and groundwater infiltration and inflow, which come from rainfall or snow melt into the system. A determination must be made of the amount of inflow and infiltration into the system and how best to reduce this in order to prevent sanitary sewer overflows as well as problems in the sewage treatment plants. (See endnote 40.)

Best Practices to Mitigate or Prevent Infiltration and Inflow into Sewer Pipes
