Clean Air Act

This act is the comprehensive federal law regulating air emissions from both stationary and mobile sources. It gives the US EPA the authority to establish the National Ambient Air Quality Standards and regulates hazardous air pollutant emissions. The law applies to human health as well as the environment and ecosystems.

Safe Drinking Water Act

This act is the comprehensive federal law that determines the quality of drinking water in the United States. It gives the US EPA the authority to set standards for drinking water quality and to implement the standards through the states, localities, and water suppliers.

Toxic Substances Control Act (See endnote 134)

This act gives the US EPA the authority to require information on reporting, record keeping, testing, and type of use, and may restrict certain chemical substances and/or mixtures. Food, drugs, cosmetics, and pesticides are excluded since they are covered under other federal laws.

Migratory Bird Treaty Act

This act makes it illegal to be involved in any purchase, importing, exporting, transporting, or sale of any migratory bird or any of its parts or nest without a valid permit from federal authorities. This act protects birds from people, which may create problems when there are large groups of birds at landfills and they potentially can spread disease.
