Medical Program

Develop a comprehensive medical program for the facility which should include a pre-employment medical evaluation and screening program; regular periodic medical examinations; special emergency medical evaluation and treatment in the event of an exposure to hazardous wastes, symptoms of illnesses, or injuries; necessary blood, urine, and tissue tests; and follow-up treatments and examination upon termination of work. Complete records should be kept and be available for review upon request. Employee confidentiality must be maintained during this process. All medical people conducting examinations must consider the person’s previous medical history, work history, specific health problems, and chronic conditions. All injuries and illnesses must be reported to the appropriate authority. Individuals must be cleared before assuming any work responsibilities based on medical conditions, ability to work when wearing personal protective equipment, and lifestyle habits such as smoking and use of alcohol and drugs as well as the pharmaceuticals used. Highly skilled medical and ancillary personnel must be available on a 24-hour basis and an on-site emergency facility must be staffed appropriately. A local general hospital must have a complete understanding of the potential hazards, medical symptoms, and how to treat individuals who have been exposed to various hazards and then are brought in to the hospital emergency room from the facility. The entire program should be subject to review by an outside professional group.
