Probiotics

Probiotics can offer healthy balance to GI microbiota by supplying protection against pathogenic bacteria, facilitating nutrient absorption, and harmonizing microorganisms disrupted by stress, disease, poor nutrition, and medications. The microbiota within the gut consists of native indigenous species but a highly processed food diet can result in reduced variety and balance.

Bacteria like lactobacilli and bifidobacteria help the body resist bad bacteria while aiding digestion and nutrient absorption. Probiotics also help to strengthen the barrier function of the intestinal wall in addition to improving immunity by stimulating natural killer and T cells.

According to Liska et al. [30] the common bacteria species found in the GI tract are listed as follows:

Stomach Lactobacilli

Small Intestine Lactobacilli Streptococci Enterobacteria Bacteroides

Large Intestine Bacteroides

Fusobacterium

Enterococcus faecalis

Lactobacilli

Staphylococcus aureus

Clostridium

Enterobacteria

Klebsiella

Eubacteria

Bifidobacteria

Streptococci

Pseudomonas

Salmonella

Feces Bacteroides
