Appendix: An outline of a (typical) cycle of theological action research
The practice of theological action research in each site looks quite different. However, there are five broad stages which can be identified in any theological action research project.
Exploring the opportunities for collaboration
The process begins with some informal conversation around the project between the leaders and the research team to explore whether this will be a good fit for them.
Plannin the research
Having agreed to work together on the research, a local team is formed who will take responsibility for the research locally and work directly with the ‘outsider’, often University-based, team. The main activity is a theological action research training day for the local team, which includes working together on identifying the research question(s). Once a research question is decided a plan is made about how data will be collected.
Gathering the data
Data is collected, by the research assistant on the project, and/or by suitably qualified practitioner co-researchers. The local team are responsible for making initial contact with participants.
Discerning the data
This is the most time consuming but also the most interesting, enjoyable and rewarding part of the process. Transcripts and field notes are distributed to all the members of the teams who then spend time reading and discerning the key themes and insights in relation to their particular research focus. The two reflector teams then meet separately to discuss the themes they observed and each produce a document which summarises the themes. The teams then swap these documents before coming together for a final meeting where a joint ‘learning document’ is produced, describing what has been learnt.
Naming the learning for action
In the joint reflector team meeting, the conversation is focused around the two teams’ documents. The key task of this meeting is to identify and name the joint learning from the research and the ways that this will, or even has already, result in action. Our experience is that learning and action comes naturally throughout the whole process; rather than deciding on learning and action as if this is the final step, the task is to name the learning for action that has arisen through the process.
