Introduction to Sustainability by Fuzzy Assessment (SAFE) Model

Sustainability by Fuzzy Assessment (SAFE) is a hierarchical fuzzy inference system. Using "IF-THEN" rules and knowledge encoded with fuzzy logic, we combine 75 input, tab-delimited critical indicators into increasingly complex variables that describe different environmental and social aspects, and finally [0,1].

This model was introduced by Phillis and Andriantiatsaholiniaina (2001), Andriantiatsaholiniaina et al. (2004), and Kouloumpis et al. (2008).

SAFE Model Overview

Overall sustainability (OSUS) is a combination of two main components: ecological sustainability (ECOS), and social or human sustainability (HUMS).

Ecological inputs consist of four secondary components:

  • 1. Land integrity (LAND),
  • 2. Water quality (WATER),
  • 3. Air quality (AIR)
  • 4. Biodiversity (BIOD)

The human-level components of sustainability are as follows:

  • 5. Political aspect (POLICY)
  • 6. Economic welfare (WEALTH)
  • 7. Health (HEALTH)
  • 8. Education (KNOW)

Each secondary component is assessed using the pressure-state-response flow of the Organization for Economic Cooperation, which assumes that humans put pressure on the environment (state) and are undeniable for irrefutable responses.

It can be obtained by combining essential indicators that cannot be removed. For example, the Indicator PR (BIOD) uses six essential indicators to reward the proportion of all endangered (or vulnerable to endangered) species (mammals, birds, plants, fish, reptiles, and amphibians). It measures the pressure on diversity.

The data processing sequence is as follows:

  • • Collection and normalization of misogynism data in [0,1]
  • • Exponential smoothing
  • • Enter missing data
  • • Fuzzy traction of sustainability: fuzzy traction of essential indicators, traction of tertiary indicators (PR (LAND), ST (LAND), RE (LAND),...), traction of secondary indicators (LAND,..., POLICY,...), ecological and human components (HUMS, ECOS), and the traction of overall sustainability (OSUS)
