Summary

Table of Contents:

The IEP at Pitt has a history of 55 years and is unusual in that it is housed in a Department of Linguistics and closely associated with a program that trains teachers and conducts research as part of its mission. The methodologies used rely on insights from second language acquisition research that is both theoretical and classroom based, which is itself grounded in diverse basic disciplines. The teachers in the ELI are trained and experienced teachers with appropriate graduate degrees (MA and PhD). Almost all have some kind of overseas experience, which enhances their ability to empathize and understand the students’ challenges in a new culture. The student body is composed of mostly younger people from various countries around the world who are seeking higher education in English. The curriculum is based on a separate skills approach that takes communicative competence as a goal to be achieved through language taskbased activities that may combine all skills at various points in a class and include explicit grammar instruction.

Note

1. Where enrollment numbers are adequate, the IEP has a Level 2 - low beginning. The IEP now has five levels, from 2-6.
