Unit Overview: Multiplication of Fractions Using Paper Folding
Aim: How can we use fractions to help us solve Muslim inheritance problems?
Objectives: Students will develop their own algorithm for multiplication of fractions.
Grade Level: Fifth
Number of 60-Minute Periods: 1

NCTM Principles
- • Teaching and Learning, Access and Equity, Curriculum, Tools and Technology, Assessment NCTM Standards
- • Number and Operation: understand meanings of operations
CCSSM Standards
- 5.NF.B.4.A. Interpret the product (a/b) x q as a parts of a partition of q into b equal parts.
- 5.NF.B.5.A. Compare the size of a product to the size of one factor on the basis of the size of the other factor, without performing the indicated multiplication.
- 5.NF.B.6. Solve real-world problems involving multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers, for example, by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem.
NCTM Processes/CCSSM Mathematical Practices
• Problem Solving
SMP1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
• Reasoning and Proof
SMP2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
SMP3: Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
SMP8: Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
• Communication
SMP3: Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
SMP6: Attend to precision.
• Representation
SMP4: Model with mathematics.
SMP8: Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
Prerequisites
- • Understand fractions as parts of unit wholes
- • Recognize and generate equivalent forms of commonly used fractions
- • Understand various meanings of multiplication
Mathematical Concepts: Using a paper-folding technique and problems of inheritance derived from Islamic law, students develop their own algorithm for multiplication of fractions. They apply their algorithm to solve additional inheritance problems.
Materials and Tools
- • Per student: handout, several pieces of paper about 3" x 8", colored pencils Management Procedures
- • Have cut paper strips ready for the lesson ahead of time.
- • Put students in groups of 2-4.
- • Lesson could be taught using direct instruction with problem solving done by students in pairs or small groups.
Assessment
- • Circulate to observe and question students' work.
- • For homework, assign practice using paper folding and the multiplication algorithm.
